Educational Note Overview
As vehicles integrate more ADAS and automated driving (AD) functions, precise radar validation becomes critical for safety features such as AEBSS and SAE Level 2 and 3 automation. While simulation-based testing offers flexibility, it often lacks real-world fidelity, and road testing can be costly and inconsistent. Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing bridges this gap by enabling repeatable, real-time evaluation of radar sensors under realistic conditions. Using solutions such as radar echo generation and advanced antenna arrays, dynamic targets can be simulated across range, velocity, angle, and size. This note explores how closed-loop HIL systems support accurate and efficient validation of automotive radar performance.
